The world of hockey starting from the bottom:

There is no particular date that we can track field hockey back to but there is games similar to the sport which may have contributed to hockey being created. These games wouldn't be directly to hockey but they have similar quality's such as the stick and ball concept. some examples of early hockey relations would be the Irish game of hurling and a game quite similar to that which originated from Scotland called Shinty.

modern day hockey dates back to have begun in the 19th century in public British schools. As time went on the game was getting more and more developed as the years went by. Teddington hockey club was a major contributor to the developing of hockey. Finally in 1886 hockey was starting to be seen as a real sport and a hockey association  was formed by seven London clubs and included representatives from trinity college and Cambridge university. The founding members were Austria, Belgium, France, Hungary, Spain and Switzerland.

women and men are different although hockey was developing by year, it still wasn't seen acceptable for women to play a men's game. Its only been it the last 100 to 200 years that hockey has become more of a women's game then a men's game. Today hockey would be known all over the world and is even played in the Olympics from teams all over the world and played by men and woman.
